Italy is geographically divided into three parts:

1) A continental part, delineated to the north from the Alps and south from the conventional line that connects La Spezia (in Liguria) to Rimini
(in Romagna);

2) A peninsula that stretches into the Mediterranean Sea from north west to south east,

3) An insular part with over 130 islands, which includes the two largest islands in the Mediterranean, Sardinia and Sicily, near which, at the island of Pantelleria, it has the minimum distance from Africa, about 70 km.

It is bordered to the west by France, to the north by Switzerland and Austria and to the east by Slovenia.
